Increasing the Impact of Support Programs for the Newspace Ecosystem through Data

CNES and its challenges

  • Structure and consolidate the space ecosystem in France through recognized expertise at CNES.
  • Foster the emergence of future space services and uses to address key societal and environmental challenges.
  • Enhance the power and expertise of France in the space sector in Europe and globally.

Our approach

  • Understanding the data needs of CNES and structuring data models (MCD) to meet them.
  • Understanding the tool requirements of CNES and benchmarking innovation management tools.
  • Supporting the deployment of an innovation management tool, from data input to change management.

The benefits

  • Modelling and centralization of an ecosystem with over 800 actors in the French space ecosystem.
  • Highlighting over 500 supports provided by CNES to its external ecosystem.
  • Standardization of technological, thematic, and service reference frameworks addressed by CNES to facilitate internal collaboration.

The challenges

Developing an excellence-driven space innovation ecosystem in France.

In a context of rapid development of space technologies by private actors, CNES (National Center for Space Studies) must strengthen its role as an accelerator of this ecosystem in France. The “Connect by CNES” program aims to extend CNES’s expertise beyond its walls by supporting new actors in Newspace while distributing expertise, technologies, and spatial data for the benefit of other sectors. This program highlights CNES’s crucial role in orchestrating this complex ecosystem, contributing to the development and promotion of space in France, Europe, and globally. In this perspective, the central challenge of the “Connect by CNES” program is to ensure synergy among the different CNES entities to provide a coherent and effective support offering (expertise, training, financing, incubation, etc.) to the ecosystem. CNES aims to enhance the coordination of these entities and improve information sharing to transition from a siloed approach to a coherent and measurable overall support for the ecosystem.

Our approach

A data platform for coordinated support for the Newspace ecosystem.

CNES mandated ECOSYS Group to define data and tool needs to address the challenges of the “Connect by CNES” program. Our approach was structured around the following steps:

  • Identification of strategic and operational needs: Through workshops and interviews with over 30 individuals, we identified essential data for management, communication, and support of stakeholders. This information helped define the necessary data models for a centralized information platform.
  • Analysis of user functional needs: We examined collaboration needs, notifications, standardized workflows, and evaluation grids to optimize collaboration among internal CNES services, defining homogeneous support processes.
  • Benchmarking and selection of the innovation management tool: We conducted a comparative analysis of available tools, leading to the selection of the BloomFlow vendor as the suitable solution.
  • Support for the deployment of BloomFlow: As Product Owner, we oversaw the tool configuration, data restructuring, and change management, integrating users from the beta-testing phase.

The benefits

Strengthening the ecosystem and enhancing strategic partnerships.

Through the implementation of a tailored solution, ECOSYS Group achieved significant results that reinforced the partnership ecosystem of French startups within CNES. Here are the main benefits obtained:

  • Ecosystem Modelling: Mapping of over 800 actors and 140 cities worldwide, providing a comprehensive and detailed view of the Newspace ecosystem.
  • Key Technological Domains Referencing: Over 20 key technological domains identified, structuring the ecosystem to facilitate analysis of trends and opportunities within it.
  • Identification of New Partnership Opportunities: Data analysis revealed new partnership opportunities between startups and CNES partners, stimulating innovation and growth.
  • Strengthening CNES’s Legitimacy: Valorization of the partnership ecosystem, consolidating CNES’s position as a leader in space innovation in France and beyond.

These results demonstrate our commitment to providing innovative and customized solutions.
