The challenges

Achieving the highest CSR standards and becoming a role model for the entire mining industry

Eramet, a global player in the mining and metallurgy industry, aims to become a reference for the responsible transformation of the Earth’s mineral resources. To achieve this, the company faced significant challenges:

  • Compliance with international standards: To meet stakeholder expectations and ensure its legitimacy on the international stage, Eramet committed to adhering to the most demanding international standards for corporate social responsibility, particularly those of the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA).
  • Standardization of processes: With mining operations in 16 countries, Eramet needed to standardize its CSR performance monitoring processes, using indicators produced frequently enough to allow for analysis and the implementation of corrective action plans to meet the highest standards. Data management norms had to be established to ensure that each site could reliably produce the indicators defined at the group level.
  • Training and awareness of employees: To ensure the success of its CSR initiatives, Eramet needed to train and raise awareness among its employees about compliance and auditability issues related to social and community data. This required the implementation of tailored training programs and a corporate culture focused on transparency and accountability.

In response to these challenges, Eramet turned to ECOSYS Group for assistance in designing and implementing an integrated People (roles and responsibilities), Process, and Technology operational framework for monitoring CSR performance, particularly in its relations with local communities

Our approach

A field-based approach across multiple sites to co-construct an accepted CSR management standard

Our team developed an approach structured around the following phases:

  1. Multi-site diagnostic and proposal of a standard data governance model:
  • Field analysis: Business procedures and local data management practices were examined to establish a diagnosis within 4 Group subsidiaries in Gabon, Argentina, and Senegal
  • Collaborative workshops: Workshops were held to define a coherent set of common KPIs, facilitating standardized assessment of social and community performance
  • Definition of a Data Governance Model: Standardized processes for data collection, analysis, and reporting, accompanied by an organizational chart, were established to ensure effective performance management
  1. Technological solution for data management:
  • Analysis of business needs: We collaborated closely with our client to thoroughly understand its business needs and identify necessary improvements to the existing digital platform.
  • Specification of input modules: We formulated detailed functional specifications to adapt the input modules of the platform to the specific needs of the sites, ensuring effective and relevant data collection.
  • Definition of indicators and graphics: In collaboration with business teams, we specified the indicators and graphics to be integrated into the platform, enabling in-depth analysis and clear visualization of social performance.
  • Development of a tooling solution: We assisted the IT department in implementing this technological solution by guiding the design, testing, and business validation stages.
  1. Training and awareness of employees:
  • Tailored training programs: Custom training sessions, considering each site’s specifics, were conducted to ensure understanding and adoption of the new processes and tools by local employees.
  • Change management support: Transitional tools were implemented to facilitate the shift towards data-driven management of community projects.

The benefits

From the era of CSR reporting to the era of CSR performance management.

Thanks to these integrated solutions, Eramet successfully addressed the challenges related to managing social and community data, reinforcing its commitment to a responsible and sustainable transformation of its global operations.

  • Standardization and definition of community activity KPIs: We worked with stakeholders to identify and define 40 standard KPIs at the Group level and more than 50 site-specific indicators, allowing for a 360-degree evaluation of environmental and social performance.
  • Training and awareness: Across 4 Group subsidiaries, we trained 30 individuals on data governance issues and deployed monitoring and evaluation models for projects to guide local teams toward new performance management practices.
  • Improvement of indicator traceability: For each key process of community activity, we modelled the data lifecycle, detailing evidence documents, collection, storage, and visualization tools, as well as roles associated with each step.

With these innovative and replicable solutions, companies with a strong territorial footprint can enhance their commitment to sustainability and positively contribute to community well-being and environmental protection.
